Blue light cop says he was in danger
2011-10-10 22:48

Pietermaritzburg - A VIP protection unit member charged with shooting at a vehicle told the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Monday that he fired shots because the driver posed a danger to him.

Constable Hlanganani Nxumalo, bodyguard for KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe, admitted to firing shots during the incident which caused a huge public outcry.

Eight people were injured during the incident in 2008.

Nxumalo was with his colleague, Caiphus Ndlela when the incident happened and they were on their way to fetch Radebe in Hammarsdale.

Nxumalo is said to have shot out the tyre of a Mazda car near Camperdown, resulting in the driver losing control, veering into oncoming traffic before colliding head-on with a bakkie.

Nxumalo told the court, that the driver of the car he fired at posed a danger to them and had tried to bump them off the road.

He said he had warned the driver to slow down by signalling to him and that his attempts to stop him had been met with a middle finger response.

Nxumalo told the court he reached for his gun and fired warning shots after it became clear the driver would not give way.

Asked why they had not passed the other car, Nxumalo said he could not give a response as he was not driving.

The trial continues and Ndlela is expected to take the stand on Tuesday.
