Speak the language of robbers - arm yourself
July 21, 2008 Edition 1

While dropping off a friend in Mew Way, Khayelitsha, the other day, I was
startled by two armed robbers who demanded money, cellphones and firearms.

Some believe that an armed response to this type of tyranny will only
escalate the violence.

Not so - an armed response actually diffused the attack and my two
passengers and I are, by God's grace, blessed to still be alive. My advice
for those who frequent the area to collect or drop off staff, is to be very
alert.

The attackers were very well organised. They even had a hidden armed guard
covering them during their attack - not your average hoodlums.

Don't expect any help from the local community. The only person who can stop
a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun - nobody else will be of much
help. A taxi full of witnesses expressed what I think most South Africans
feel when the good guys fight back. As they drove past, waving and thumbs-up
signs were the order of the day. We need to be prepared, and do what it
takes, to protect our friends and families.

Bravo for fighting back and surviving
July 20, 2008 Edition 1

Bravo to Charl van Wyk for his letter "Carry a firearm and fight back"
(Weekend Argus, July 19) and for refusing the rabbit mentality.

I, too, fought back when hijacked and survived with my life, car and
self-esteem intact.

A second bravo is for spreading the word that we don't need to simply cower
before criminals.
