'Dumbest criminal' saved by the cops

A would-be robber was glad to be arrested in Durban on Sunday when his victims turned on him after discovering that he was brandishing a harmless toy gun.

Police and paramedics rushed to the aid of the man, who was being beaten up by an angry mob outside a bar in Umbilo Road. ER24 spokesperson Neil Noble said the man had walked into the crowded bar and had attempted to rob patrons early on Sunday.

"He had drawn a firearm and he would have succeeded if one of his victims had not noticed that the weapon was a toy, and began assaulting him.

"He managed to escape, but the crowd chased him into the street, beating him," he said.

The man was treated at the scene for injuries he sustained during the beating.

Noble said the police had seen the humour in the situation, as had the robber, who at that stage was grateful to be alive, albeit with a broken nose.

He begged not to be charged by the police and jokingly threatened to take his own life with his toy gun. However, he was led away and charged.

Noble said the man won the award for this week's dumbest criminal.

In a separate incident, seven men were arrested after robbing a bar in Durban North early on Sunday.

Police Supt Vincent Mdunge said the men walked into the bar and robbed patrons of their valuables.

"One of them raised the alarm and, when police arrived, they arrested the robbers. An amount of R20 000 was recovered, as were five hand guns, cellphones and jewellery".
