"Cop kills colleague in accidental shooting"

The death of a police officer in a so-called accidental shooting while testing holsters graphically highlights the incompetence of SAPS in handling firearms. It happened because they broke all the rules of gun handling, not least of which you do not do that kind of testing with a loaded gun.

It is particularly noteworthy that SAPS is exempt from the competence standards imposed on civilians. SAPS insists that its training and competence is at least equal to the civilian standard. This incident, and the observation of we who handle firearms regularly, shows how untrue that is.

We have no doubt that few police officers would pass the civilian standard, which is why they are exempt. That makes them a risk to the public, and clearly shows a need for better training. We suggest the civilian standard would be a good start.
