Tomorrow (Wednesday, 25 January) American Pro-gun ownership rights activist and Director of Gun Owners of America, Larry Pratt, will be interviewed by a reporter from The Independent on Saturday at 13h00, and then will address the Durban Gun Owners Association at 14h00. At 18h00 Pratt will speak to ACDP candidates. All these meetings will take place at Merthyr House (Corner of Kings Rd and Crompton Str, Pinetown).

Today (Tuesday 24 January), Pratt spoke at a public meeting in Bloemfontein attended by pro-gun ownership politicians and other interested members of the public.

Pratt spoke about the dangers of the recent Firearms Control Act and the damage it could do to the rights of citizens to defend themselves.

"Crime affects people everywhere, nowhere is safe," said Pratt. Pratt mentioned the 1993 St James Massacre in Cape Town where 11 people were killed and 58 wounded as an example of how even churches can be the targets of heinous crimes. "One congregant, however, was able to shoot back and save many lives because he was armed," Pratt said.

"Guns are not the problem. On the contrary, lax criminal penalties and laws that disarm the law-abiding are responsible for giving criminals a safer working environment," said Pratt.

Pratt is well known in the US for his pro-gun ownership position, appearance on numerous radio and television shows and for lobbying the pro-gun position in Washington. Pratt supports the right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms, particularly the right to self-defense.

Pratt has been the Executive Director of Gun Owners of America for 25 years and has debated numerous Unites States congressmen and senators including former Vice President Al Gore.

Gun Owners of America has a membership of 300, 000 Americans dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Larry Pratt has written, On the Firing Line: Essays in the Defense of Liberty, Armed People Victorious, and Safeguarding Liberty: The Constitution and Militias.

Pratt will also be promoting the newly formed Gun Owners of South Africa,as well as researching the effects of the Firearms Control Act to report back to his constituents and members in the USA, to mobilize international support for the right of South Africans to own guns.
