Student critical after shooting

JOHANNESBURG – Twenty-year-old student Neria Ramoditsetse from Solomondale
is fighting for her life after allegedly being shot in the head by police as
they tried to disperse an angry crowd at the University of Limpopo (UniLim)
last week.
The secretary of the SA Students’ Congress in Limpopo, Richard Ramashia,
said students were protesting against a proposed fee increase for 2008.
The woman was shot as she apparently tried to isolate herself from the tense
situation, Ramashia said.
“She was not part of the rampaging group. She was passing by when the police
shot at her. They were using real bullets to disperse the students and we
have evidence.”
She is in critical condition in the Polokwane Provincial Hospital’s
intensive care unit.
Ramashai said students at the campus were tired of corruption and
mismanagement of funds.
“Millions of rands are unaccounted for on this campus,” he claimed. Student
leaders had already submitted their concerns to Minister of Education Naledi
Pandor, and they needed her to intervene.
Thirty students were arrested during the rampage, but later released due to
a lack of evidence.
Police Inspector Malan Nchabeleng, of Mankweng, said the campus situation
had got out of control, and they had used rubber bullets to disperse the
“I cannot confirm if real bullets were used, as we are still waiting for the
doctor’s report.”
A case of attempted murder had been opened by Ramoditsetse’s family,
Nchabaleng said. – CNS.
