Criminals are gaining

I BELIEVE that of all the countries, including those at war, the chances of staying alive are worst in South Africa.

Criminals appear to be gaining on the rest of us. They appear to be well-armed, well-organised and fearless because of the lack of the death penalty.

I am waiting for the human rights brigade or the government to make a public statement.

I feel sorry for the police, as in no way can they protect us against such scum. Only self-defence, authorised by the Government by using firearms, will stop the rot.

2007-10-31 : What must be done

CANDIDA Pax, “Criminals are gaining”, (The Citizen October 29) makes some compelling statements, but apparently is misled by government propaganda.

The police have never had a duty to protect any citizen and never will have. It is the duty of every citizen to protect themselves and to secure their own goods.

A return of the death penalty most certainly can’t fix the problem of crime in South Africa. How will the death penalty make incompetent government competent? This is what must be done:

Arrest and convict the 94% of crime which goes unpunished;

Fix the unemployment rate and the social services government has made a complete mess of;

Root out the rotten eggs, corrupt and criminals sanctioned by government;

Scrap the Firearms Control Act which was designed to disarm all law-abiding citizens.

The problem is not one of harsh punishments for the few who are caught, and that 70% will escape conviction and punishment, but one of gross incompetence by government.
