Johannesburg - Around 18 firearms have been stolen from a police station at KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, it was reported on Wednesday.

The weapons were mostly evidence pieces being kept under lock and key, Beeld reported.

The theft was discovered on Monday when the police's logistics division held an inspection at the station and found that more than 12 pistols, assorted revolvers and even an R-5 rifle had been taken from the evidence room.

Colonel Leonard Hlathi told the newspaper the theft was being investigated.

According to Beeld, there have been previous, similar thefts in the province.

In February 2010, during an internal audit at the former riot unit in Hazyview, the authorities discovered the theft of part of a large arsenal including at least 32 R-5 rifles, thirty 12-gauge shotguns, a number of Z88 pistols and 48 000 bullets.

In 2012, a trunk full of weapons linked to various crimes was stolen from the Mhluzi police station in Middelburg.
