Gauteng crime statistics show police can't cope in suburbs.

Only two of Gauteng's 127 police precincts are winning the war on
domestic robberies - Silverton in Tshwane and Boksburg North,

The most detailed crime maps yet produced in South Africa - by
statistician Michael O'Donovan for the Centre for Justice and Crime
Prevention - show that Gauteng is the country's house- robbery

The precincts of Silverton - including the suburbs of Meyerspark,
Murreyfield, Watermeyer and Nellmapius - and Boksburg North - including
Woodfield, Jet Park, Bartlett and Bardine - are the only two in the
low-risk category.

Showing fewer than five house robberies per 10000 residents are
Orlando, Meadowlands and Diepkloof, Soweto; Midrand and Olifantsfontein;
Nigel; and the Vaal's Sebokeng, Boipatong and Sharpeville.

Director Poobalan Subbiah, head of Boksburg North station, said house
robbery was reduced because they had acquired more police vehicles and
had placed civilians in charge of the police station, leaving more
police to attend to complaints.

Teddy Martin, head of the Orlando community police forum that covers
large parts of Soweto, said armed house robbery was low there because
'people know their neighbours'.

'In the suburbs, someone can clean out a house and neighbours
wouldn*t know.'

Gauteng police spokesman Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said armed robbers
'target affluent areas because people have valuable items'.
