A Chatsworth mother's routine journey to drop off her child at school ended in bloodshed on Tuesday when she was shot three times outside her son's primary school.

Nalini Naidu, a 35-year-old mother of two, had just dropped off five-year-old son Tyrese at Falcon Park Primary School in Kharwastan when the drama unfolded at about 7.50am.

Police spokesperson Captain Edmund Singh said Naidu was walking towards her Mercedes Benz, which was parked just outside the school gate, when a man approached her.

Continue as normal
"The unknown man fired three shots at her - one bullet struck her in the neck, another in her right thigh and one in her buttocks," said Singh.

On hearing the gunshots, teachers urged frantic school pupils to remain calm while they went to investigate.

After Naidu was rushed to a nearby hospital, an urgent staff meeting was subsequently convened where it was decided that school would continue as normal.

Although Naidu survived the shooting, her family now fear for her life.

Police said her vehicle as well as belongings like her handbag, jewellery and cellphone, were not taken.

'I am shocked something like this happened outside a primary school'
The gunman was seen fleeing the scene on foot.

Naidu's husband, Seelan, a former policeman, was too distraught to speak to the Daily News.

Nelson Rajaram, a Chatsworth councillor who had been driving past the school just after the shooting, stopped to give his support to parents and witnesses.

"I am shocked something like this happened outside a primary school," he said.

Singh warned parents to be extra cautious and vigilant when dropping and fetching their children from school.
