Hijackers fire on patrolling police

FOUR police officers came under fire on Sunday evening when they tried to pull over a vehicle during a routine stop and search exercise in KwaZakhele.

Police said four members of the New Brighton crime prevention unit were busy with general patrols in the area when they noticed a vehicle with four men inside.

They decided to conduct a stop and search of the vehicle, but when they approached the driver sped away.

The police van followed and soon came under fire, with at least one bullet ricocheting off the windscreen.

Police then received a report that the vehicle had in fact been hijacked only minutes before. Xolani Pitso, 25, from Motherwell was hijacked. Meanwhile, the men who fired on the police jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. No-one was injured, but counselling was arranged for the four police members involved.

A case of hijacking as well as one of attempted murder were opened and police are investigating.
