Gun compensation challenge goes to court

A CLAIM for compensation for weapons surrendered under the firearm control
legislation will be argued in the Cape High Court next week, the Justice
Alliance of SA (Jasa) said today (August 26).

Jasa said it had joined with the False Bay Gun Club in demanding the
minister of police should within 60 days draw up guidelines for
compensation as required by section 137 of the Firearms Control Act.

The State's refusal so far to pay compensation was a breach of its
constitutional obligations relating to the principles governing public

Jasa said both individuals and dealers had suffered financial hardship
through this refusal.

In one of several supporting affidavits filed in court a dealer said she
had suffered a loss of over R2-million in surrendering her stock of firearms.

The application would be heard on Monday. Sapa
