I'm 'gatvol' when I read about out-of-control crime

October 14, 2006 Edition 1

"Gatvol" is a far more decent expression for what I feel right now. Politics is and always has a business, far bigger in our now so-called democratic South Africa.

One feels more than "gatvol" when one reads about 24 dangerous cash-in-transit heist suspects, five of whom are out on bail for previous criminal offences, and guess what, arrested immediately again for another cash heist in Klerksdorp.

At times, cash protection guards are mercilessly murdered. Some happen to be loving fathers, husbands, sons, brothers and uncles. Do you uncivilised barbarians even think of the pain and sufferings you'll cause, just for the greed of money? I doubt it.

The expulsion of a top South African diplomat from Britain is quite amusing. Imagine a 16-year-old, arrested for armed robbery and now another son, aged 12, arrested for possession of a self-defence spray gun, fleeing British authorities before they could question him.

This is unacceptable.
