A Philippi police officer who is facing trial in connection with a
colleague's death during a 2003 shooting rampage has requested a
postponement to consult a neurologist.

Denver Prins faces a murder charge for the death of 25-year-old
Siyabulela Jonas.

He also faces seven attempted murder charges, three of pointing a
firearm, handling a firearm negligently, handling a firearm while
under the influence of alcohol and holding a colleague hostage.

He has pleaded not guilty, saying in his plea explanation that he does
not recall the incident. He was assessed by two psychologists and
declared fit for trial.

Prins is accused of taking student constable Ndumiso Gordon hostage at
the Philippi police station on January 19, 2003.

He is alleged to have shot and killed Jonas during the incident, with
more than 50 shots fired. Taxi passenger Luntu Mbuli suffered severe
injuries to his mouth when he was hit by a stray bullet.

Last week the court heard the testimony of Inspector Erwin du Plessis,
who said Prins was "very unhappy" about being denied a promotion.

Du Plessis told the court Prins was frustrated with under staffing. On
the night of the shooting, there were three officers on duty. However,
nine were required.

The case was postponed to November 8.
