We want our guns back, say traffic cops

February 06, 2007 Edition 1

Provincial traffic officers, whose guns were taken away last month, are urging the Department of Community Safety to reissue their firearms after two officers were forced to flee the scene of an accident at the weekend when a mob descended on them.

Traffic officers have told the Cape Argus of victimisation and threats since their guns were withdrawn to comply with the amended Firearms Control Act.

Community Safety spokesman Makhaya Mani said last month that traffic officers at eight provincial traffic centres would be reissued with their weapons at the end of January.

The firearms had to be re-registered in accordance with the Act.

The eight centres are Brackenfell, Somerset West, Caledon, Worcester, Oudtshoorn, Beaufort West, Laingsburg and Vredenburg.

But traffic officers the Cape Argus spoke to say the guns have not been returned and they unsure about when they will again be armed.

This weekend two traffic officers patrolling near Khayelitsha were attacked when two men noticed that they were unarmed.

The officers, who had stopped at an accident scene on the N2 at the Mew Way turn-off near Khayelitsha, said two suspects had run "to fetch guns" after a police patrol had left the accident scene.

The men returned with a group of people and the officers were forced to flee the scene.

Mani said officers with queries should contact his office.
