Pupils to appear for having gun at school
11/02/2008 14:08 - (SA)

Durban - Two northern KwaZulu-Natal schoolboys - arrested for firearm
possession at a high school - are expected to appear at the KwaMsane
Magistrate's Court on Monday, police said.
Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the teenagers - aged 17 and 18 - were
arrested at the Mgwazeni High School in KwaMsane on Friday afternoon.
"Police received information that two boys had carried weapons into the
school and so we acted on it," he said.
One boy was found with a magazine and seven rounds while the second youth
was found with a 9mm pistol.
Both were arrested at the school and taken into police custody.
Mdletshe could not confirm whether the parents of the boys had been arrested
for negligence of not safeguarding the firearm.
Ntokoza Maphisa, the province's education spokesperson, said: "It worries us
as a department that learners are bringing drugs and weapons into schools.
"We have signs at the gate entrance of schools saying that no drugs and
weapons are allowed on the premises but pupils are ignoring this."
Maphisa said the department was calling on all parents to check their
children before sending them to school.
"We also encourage other pupils, who spot their classmates with weapons, to
report it," he said.
