Johannesburg - A man assaulted his former wife so badly that clumps of her
hair were still intertwined in his hands after she shot and killed him on
Wednesday night.

The body of Frik van Deventer, 58, was found in the rondavel belonging to
his former wife, Gerda, 56, on their remote farm Weltevrede, outside
Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) in Limpopo.

A security guard from Scorpion Security Services in Mookgophong, who wanted
to remain anonymous, saw Gerda on Wednesday night. "If someone had hit me
like that, I would also have shot him," he said.

Her head and face was apparently covered in blood.

A vicious two-hour argument apparently preceded the shooting. The Van
Deventers were divorced a few years ago. It was a second marriage for both
of them.

Gerda was often assaulted, said a family member. At one stage, she even got
a protection order against him.

According to the family member, the divorce agreement stated that the farm
was to be split and that she could live on one part. As neighbours, she and
her former husband had run small farming enterprises with pigs and chickens.

On Wednesday afternoon, he had slaughtered one of the cattle on his part of
the farm. She and a few people had helped him with that. At the time, Van
Deventer was apparently already drinking.

"The drinking started in the afternoon already. He really hit the bottle,"
said the security guard. After the other people left, they started arguing.

Van Deventer apparently took a .22 hunting rifle and pointed it at his
former wife, threatening to kill her. She was apparently also assaulted.

She tried to get away and got into her BMW. "Frik smashed the window on the
driver's side, forced open the door and pulled her out of the car," said the
family member.

He then forced her into his bakkie and drove to her house.

Police spokesperson Inspector George Ledwaba said she then locked herself in
her rondavel.

"The man broke open the steel catch between the top and bottom door with his
hands," said Ledwaba. The fight went on and she was again assaulted.

Three shots

During the fight, she managed to get her hands on a .357 revolver and fired
at her former husband.

"After she shot him the first and second time, he still managed to get at
her," said a family member. Van Deventer only died after the third shot. He
was hit in his inner thigh, stomach and chest.

Badly injured, Gerda drove the bakkie to neighbours, who contacted the
security company and the police.

She was taken for treatment to the district doctor in Mokopane

Senior superintendent Johan Otto, detective head in Mookgophong, said a
murder docket had been opened.
