Lack of competence
Witness 10 Apr 2008
P. MOSS

STUART Knight´s wish for a crime-free South Africa (The Witness,
April 3) has little to do with law enforcement and everything to
do with competent management, expertise, resources and sound
crime-fighting policy.

When only six percent of reported crime is ever punished there
is a huge problem of incompetence and wasted manpower and
resources. Warrantless searchers and the abuse of civil rights
comprise the majority of investigative skills.
Chasing guns instead of criminals occupies far too much time and
money. A very serious lack of training and investigative skills
must be laid at the door of incompetent management and
government.

Every South African wishes the best for the hard-working,
underpaid and honest police officer whose reputation and ability
to function is being destroyed by the lazy and corrupt few. But
it is unacceptable that there are more than 6 000 police
officers under investigation and dozens more hiding behind
closed ranks.
