THERE has been a 60% decrease in cash-in-transit heist, but this
has been offset by social crimes, despite new strategies the
Safety and Security Department put in place last September,
deputy minister Suzan Shabangu, told a crime summit called by
KZN Premier S’bu Ndebele yesterday.

“This is a challenge that police can’t handle on their own,”
Shabangu said.

Delegates at the two-day summit included provincial Community
Policing Forums (CPFs), business owners, religious leaders and
government officials including traffic officers, prison
officials and the SAPS.

The theme is “An integrated, multi-disciplined approach to fight
against crime”.

KZN Community Safety and Liaison MEC Bheki Cele said “there is
no small crime”, especially for drunk drivers and speedsters.

“The law will govern all decisions irrespective of the
seriousness of the crime,” he said.
