A THOUSAND volunteers are to be identified and deployed in areas
with high levels of crime, where they will be expected to help
the police in the fight against crime.

The announcement was made by the MEC Bheki Cele when he unpacked
the department of Community Safety and Liaison department’s
budget for the 2007/2008 financial year.

“The volunteers will only be reimbursed for expenses incurred in
performing voluntary engagement functions,” he said.

He added that each volunteer team will be assigned a police
officer. Similar volunteer projects — according to Cele — have
been successful in the Western Cape, Canada and London. He also
announced 1 000 more police officers to be added to the existing
force of 23 057 police officers.

The volunteers will be citizens and not members of the SAPS or
Community Policing Forum. He said the Volunteer Social Crime
Prevention Project is aimed at reducing social crime.

The total budget is R78,8 million. The bulk of it (R56,2
million) has been allocated for the civilian oversight programme
and the rest (R22,5 million) for administration.
