Two men were killed and six others seriously injured in what appears to have been a gang-related drive-by shooting in Mitchell's Plain early Sunday.

Shortly after midnight a group of gunmen in a black VW Golf stopped at the Lentegeur civic centre in Merrydale Road, where a party was under way, and opened fire on the people standing at the entrance.

Ricardo Wagner, 37, from Lentegeur, was wounded in the head and Brian Joubert, 49, from Bonteheuwel, in the chest and stomach. They died at the scene.

The six other people wounded were taken to nearby hospitals, some in a critical condition.

'Flashpoint'
"The gunmen, who are unknown, fled in their vehicle and are at large. The motive for the (attack) appears to be gang-related, but we will investigate all possibilities," said police spokesperson Billy Jones.

He said this had been the only gang-related shooting in Cape Town at the weekend. The police would be focusing on this "flashpoint" area to find out if the incident was isolated or related to other recent drive-by shootings on the Cape Flats.

Several people have been killed or injured in the past month in Cape Flats suburbs in what experts believe to be a drug-fuelled turf war among the Americans, Ghetto Kids and the Wonder Kids.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 08600 10111.

Quick, take away some more law-abibing citizens' guns! That'll stop these gang killings once and for all!
