OK for citizens to take law into own hands - Zuma

March 18, 2009 Edition 2

Xolani Mbanjwa

PRETORIA: Law-abiding citizens are not to blame if they take the law into
their own hands, because criminals enjoy too many rights, says ANC
president Jacob Zuma.

Zuma was addressing thousands of ANC supporters at the Bakenberg Stadium in
Limpopo yesterday, just hours after a bus carrying ANC supporters to the
rally overturned, leaving nine people injured and four in a critical conditon.

The ANC leader suggested that some rights afforded to criminals should be
taken away, to protect law-abiding citizens who were living in fear of crime.

"If citizens get hold of criminals they must not be blamed to have taken
the law into their own hands. They must be supported in such action,
because police should act. Police should act with communities to get rid of
criminals," said Zuma.

It is not the first time Zuma has said the ruling party would look at
changing the law because criminals "enjoy" too many rights. Zuma said
criminals were easily getting access to bail due to loopholes in the
criminal justice system.
What have YOU done for YOUR rights today?
