October 15, 2007 Edition 1

THE front page photograph of the Cape Times (October 12) showing Springbok
lock Bakkies Botha holding a rifle during a visit to a shooting range in
Versailles, Paris, is in poor taste, considering the high crime rate and
loss of life as a result of the abuse of guns in this country.

Although the caption clearly states that it was for recreational purposes,
perhaps a different code of sport, such as golf, would have been more
appropriate.

The preference of recreational pastime by individual professional rugby
players is their private business, but because they are in the spotlight at
present and role models for our youth, managers and coaches should exercise
more discernment and discretion.

Big game hunting is a huge sport in South Africa, attracting thousands of
international tourists annually, but it is seldom highlighted for fear of
offending animal lovers, environmentalists and gun-free society lobbyists.
Similarly, the media and high-profile players should be sending out
positive messages to the masses, especially the impressionable youth.
