Policeman in the dock after shooting drama
13 November 2007, 01:21

A police constable appeared in the Koppies magistrate's court on
Monday for allegedly killing two police clerks and wounding a
police superintendent.

Police spokesperson Inspector Harry Nagel said the case against
Constable Paul Ismael Mofokeng, 26, was postponed until December
19.

"He will be sent for observation while the investigation
continues."

Mofokeng was arrested after the shooting incident on Saturday on
the N1 highway, about 10km from Heuningspruit, in the Free State.

A man earlier stopped a Ford Icon and started shooting in the
direction at the vehicle's occupants. The passengers managed to
get out of the vehicle, but the man continued shooting at them.

Two police clerks, a man and a woman, were shot and died at the
scene. The police superintendent was also seriously wounded and
was taken to the Kroon Hospital in Kroonstad.

Mofokeng, who was stationed at the Viljoensdrif police station,
was arrested near Koppies when he was involved in an accident.

He faces charges of murder, attempted murder and driving under the
influence of alcohol.

Free State police head, Commissioner Amon Mashigo, said that,
according to information, the constable was targeting the people
who were in the vehicle.

"We are investigating the possibility that there was a love
triangle which might have triggered this ruthless act," he said. -
