Behind barricades; yet they live in fear

They have fortified their houses with security gates and burglar bars,
but two elderly Pretoria women are living in fear.

Anna Pretorius and Gudrun Graf were attacked in their homes in the
same security complex in Priory Street, Lynnwood Manor, less than two
weeks ago by a gang terrorising the eastern suburb.

The thugs are believed to be linked to a spate of house attacks in the
area and the murder of Cathy Odendaal at her home in Farnham Road, not
far from Priory Street.

Pretorius said she was reading her Bible in bed when she heard a banging noise.

"I opened the curtains and saw several men trying to get into my house.

"I ran to the front door and shouted at them, but they just carried on
breaking down the door."

She quickly slammed the bedroom security gate shut and pushed her
dressing table up against the door. And then she prayed for help.

Graf heard Pretorius's screams, and called out to her to see if she
was all right.

Pretorius then watched in horror as her attackers turned on her friend
and started beating her with a crowbar.

"I watched as they beat her. I prayed that she would be all right.

"There was nothing I could do. I heard her screams, but there was
nothing I could do," she said.

Graf, who was discharged from hospital last week, said she did not
know what was going on.

"Everything happened so quickly.

"A man ran at me and I felt something heavy hit my head. I tried to
run, but I fell down and he carried on hitting me. I tried to stop him
but I couldn't."

The men fled with Graf's hymn case and purse.

Police are investigating.
