Another diplomat has become a victim of crime in Tshwane.

Nadir Khan Jadoon, counsellor for press and culture at the Pakistani
high commission, his wife and two young children were held up by armed
robbers in Groenkloof on Tuesday night.

Senior diplomat at the high commission Javed Khattak said three men
broke into Jadoon's house while he, his wife, two children and a guest
were having dinner.

"They held a gun to his head and demanded that they hand over all
their jewellery, cash and other valuables.

"They also specifically asked for dollars and pounds and other foreign
currency, which meant they knew Jadoon was a diplomat," Khattak said.

He said that after taking all the jewellery and cellphones off the
family and their guest, they tied them up and locked them in the
bathroom. They then proceeded to ransack the house for two hours,
taking more electronic equipment and personal belongings.

While this was happening the family's domestic worker arrived home.

This scared off the robbers and the police and security company were alerted.

"Both took an hour to get to the house," Khattak said.

He said earlier that day another, more junior official at the high
commission also had his car stolen from outside his apartment in
Sunnyside.

Diplomats in Pretoria believe they have become targets for criminals
after an unprecedented increase in burglaries and hold-ups over the
past year.

"Diplomats are beginning to question whether they should accept
postings to South Africa because of pressure from their families,"
Khattak said.
