MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT : POLICE’S FIREARMS CONTROL CHAOTIC
ISSUED BY : Mr. Pieter Groenewald
CAPACITY : FF Plus Chief Spokesperson: Police
DATE : 8 March 2011

The Police has in the past seven years listed 20 429 (from 2004) firearms as lost and could only find 4 810. This information was released by the Police to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee today. The Police also revealed that they have 264 845 firearms.

“This became quite clear that the Police, despite twelve control measures, which amongst others include the Control of Firearms Act, has very poor control over their firearms. The number of lost firearms proves this and it is an open question whether the figure is correct and is not much higher. The loss also speaks of poor discipline and carelessness in the Police with regard to firearms. It is expected of law-abiding firearm owners to exercise absolute control and care of their firearms otherwise they are criminally charged and prosecuted. The Police views themselves apparently as above the law because members who lose their firearms are not charged criminally but are merely re-issued with a new firearm. It is unacceptable and members should be charged criminally and if found guilty should be discharged. Firearm control in the Police is chaotic and through this crime is promoted,” Mr. Pieter Groenewald (MP), chief spokesperson on Police for the Freedom Front Plus says.
