Issue #15 - March 2008 DA's 'Crime Focus'

425% INCREASE IN LOST AND STOLEN SAPS FIREARMS SINCE 2004

In reply to a DA parliamentary question, Minister of Safety and Security
Charles Nqakula has admitted that a total of 6 888 firearms have been lost
or stolen from the South African Police Service (SAPS) since 2004. These
firearms include pistols, rifles, shotguns and revolvers.

"What is even more disturbing is that the majority of these firearms have
been lost, and the total number of stolen/lost firearms has increased by
425% since 2004. The SAPS has only managed to recover 158 of these lost or
stolen firearms. The SAPS has also not secured the return of 439 firearms
from ex-SAPS who have left the service," said DA deputy spokesperson on
safety and security Ryno King.

King said that municipalities were also guilty of having firearms lost or
stolen. The worst municipal offenders in this respect are the City of
Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and eThekwini, with a total of 981 firearms being
lost or stolen between them in the past three years.

"Despite the Auditor-General noting poor SAPS firearms control since 2004,
matters are getting worse and not better. If the SAPS is serious about the
fight against crime, then it must get its own house in order," said King.
