Mother shot dead in casino robbery

By Alex Eliseev

When a gang of AK47-wielding robbers stormed through the doors of Gold
Reef City's casino, Gloria Moropane probably knew exactly what to do.

After all, the mother-of-three had worked at the casino for 10 years.
She took cover behind the cash desk.

But the robbers, holding security staff hostage, fired two warning
shots into the counter.

One of the bullets tore through the bottom section and killed the
44-year-old supervisor hiding there.

The gang, consisting of at least eight men, struck at the casino on
Saturday morning.

They drove in and entered through the main entrance, disarming a
security guard and also taking his radio.

"Inside, they held security staff hostage and proceeded to the tills,"
police spokesperson Superintendent Thembi Nkwashu said.

"They emptied the tills and fled with an undisclosed amount of money."

But to get to the cash, the gunmen fired two shots at the cash desk -
one of which killed Moropane.

Gold Reef City's marketing manager Joan Jacobs said medical teams were
sent after the gang fled and police officers arrived "within minutes".

Casino staff and guests caught in the robbery were offered trauma counselling.

Jacobs said Moropane was a dedicated employee who had worked with the
casino since it opened.

Her youngest child is believed to be 10 years old and the casino
organised counselling for her family, who were too shocked to speak to
the media on Sunday.

"Our condolences go out to Gloria's family at this tragic time," Jacobs said.

"We share their grief and anguish."

Nkwashu, meanwhile, has warned the public not to approach the gang if
they come across them.

"They are extremely dangerous and are heavily armed," she said.

"But we appeal to the community to assist the police with information
that could lead to their arrest and prosecution."

Nkwashu would not be drawn on whether the robbers disguised their
faces or details of their getaway vehicles.

She said there could have been more than eight robbers but that was
the number that reportedly entered the casino.

Saturday's robbery bore a chilling resemblance to one at the same
casino in November 2005 when eight robbers, armed with AK47s, sprayed
the casino with bullets.

A similar hit took place in March that year.
