It's time to stop being apathetic to crime in SA

November 19, 2007 Edition 1

My husband, Antony Wrede, was shot and killed on Friday, November 11 2007
and nothing was stolen.

He died in vain but his last brave act was trying to save my children and
I. I am sick and tired of the apathy of the man in the street towards crime.

I am also guilty, in the past, of being apathetic toward crime but now it
has hit very close to home and I realise just how devastating it is. It
shatters your life and changes everything about your future. If I can
prevent another family going through this I will.

I am tired of having thoughts of emigration to feel safe. This is my home
and I will NOT let these vermin chase me away from my home and family.

Who the hell do they think they are? I am tired of criminals feeding off us
like parasites and all we do is send in petitions and organise marches. I
applaud your crime line but it's too little, too late.

I want the death sentence reinstated and I will fight until my last breath
to see that this is done. I admire Madiba, but he set in motion terrible

There are a lot of people (all cultures) who have had enough and I am
asking for their support to do something constructive. I am not talking
about vigilante groups but people who want to see a safe SA.

If the vermin that shot my husband knew that if they were caught they would
die, they would have hesitated and at least given my husband a fair chance.

I am very upset that my husband's death will become just another statistic.

Jo-Anne Wrede
