An armed man, out on parole for robbery, was shot dead and his
accomplice seriously injured when they tried to rob an Ekurhuleni
businessman in the driveway of his home.

However, the businessman and his teenage daughter, who was in the
bakkie at the time, on Wednesday night denied shooting the would-be
robbers.

"They came and demanded money.

Suddenly I heard gunshots being fired and my daughter got out of the
bakkie and threw the little money that she had on the ground

"I started screaming for help and more and more gunfire took place. I
do not know who killed the robbers," said the businessman.

The survivor, known only as Nhlanhla, was found in possession of a
police Z88 pistol with its serial number filed off.

He and the dead man, Mandla Njokwe, were released on parole from
Benoni's Modderbee prison two months ago.

The drama unfolded on Wednesday night in the predominantly Muslim
community of Actonville, outside Benoni.

Constable Gordon Nyathi said the 59-year-old businessman, who asked
not to be identified, closed shop at a nearby shopping complex and
drove home in his bakkie with his 18-year-old daughter.

He was reversing into his driveway when two men approached him, demanding money.

"They took the money from the complainant.

"He managed to get the money back and a shootout ensued," said Nyathi.

"During this, one of the men was killed while the other was hit in the
head and leg."

The businessman said he had learnt to be alert as he had "experienced"
10 such crimes before.
