Tshwane metro police's Commander Simon Bhebe has been charged with attempted murder after apparently being involved in a shootout which left him and another person injured.

The incident took place outside a tavern called Mazukwana in Atteridgeville, near Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday after Bhebe and a friend allegedly argued with a group of men.

Gunshots were fired by both groups and Bhebe and a second man were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

A third person was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Police confiscated three firearms and two vehicles at the scene of the incident.

Police Inspector Paul Ramaloko confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened against Bhebe and that he was in hospital. He said Bhebe had been informed of his pending arrest once he was released from hospital.

Medforum Medi-Clinic spokesperson Delores van Vuuren confirmed Bhebe had been a patient at the hospital but added that he was unwilling to speak to the media. Van Vuuren said the hospital was not at liberty to divulge any details of Bhebe's condition.
