A policeman was found murdered early on Sunday morning in Meadowlands Soweto, Gauteng police said.

Detective Constable Kwezi Jaquisa, 33, was found around 5.30am with a bullet wound to the back of his head, lying in an open space between zone six and zone ten in Meadowlands, said spokesperson Captain Julia Claassen.

His gun was lying beside him, his wallet and phone were on him and his marked police car was idling in a road nearby. He was on duty at the time.

Police spokesperson Inspector Kay Makhubele said: "Inspector Jabulani from Dobsonville was on his way from Meadowlands when he noticed the car on the side of the road. Then he saw the body.

"The [dead] officer was on night shift and had just dropped off another officer in Dobsonville. He was on his way back to collect another member from the police station."

The victim, originally from the Eastern Cape, had been serving in the police service for a year.

No arrests had been made and case of murder was being investigated. - Sapa
