War on crime causes traffic snarl ups

November 19 2007 at 03:17PM

Severe traffic snarl ups in the Rosebank and Greenside areas of Johannesburg on Monday were caused by a police roadblock aimed at confiscating illegal firearms in a bid to curb crime, metro police said.

Spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said a roadblock was conducted on Jan Smuts Avenue during peak hour in an effort to weed out criminals "on their way to commit robberies and heists".

"Unfortunately law abiding citizens are going to be inconvenienced by this but to get these perpetrators, it is a small price to pay," she said.

Information on the outcome of the roadblock would be available later, she said.

Gauteng police reported that five people died in attempted heists in Gauteng on Monday.

In Pretoria four robbers were shot dead and two policemen were injured during an attempted heist on a Coin Security van. Four robbers were arrested.

One robber was shot dead in Sebokeng and three others wounded during an attempt heist on an SBV security van. Two people were arrested in that attempt.

In both attempts police confiscated several weapons, including an AK47. - Sapa
