Two people were shot dead and two were victims of knife attacks in London.
Elsewhere, two people were stabbed to death, a man was run over by a lorry
and another was killed in a brawl.

Norman Brennan, director of the Victims of Crime Trust, said: "These figures
reiterate why Britain is one of the most dangerous countries in the western

and why millions in Britain live in fear of crime.

"Each murder affects on average 300 people."

Mr Brennan has called for random and targeted stop and searches "en masse"
to prevent stabbings and shootings and prevent people carrying weapons.
He also demanded that incoming Prime Minister Gordon Brown introduce
five-year mandatory prison sentences for those who carry knives in public
places.

On Friday night, a man in his 20s was shot in Acton, West London, as he
arrived at a friend's house on a moped.

In the early hours of Saturday, a 17-year-old woman - named as Annaka

Swan bar in Philip Lane, Tottenham, North London.

Mikey Brown, 23, from New Addington, was stabbed to death after a row in The
Works nightclub, Kingston, South West London. A 19-year-old man has been

Fourteen teenagers held over his death have been released on bail.

In Bradford, West Yorkshire, a 33-year-old man was killed by a lorry as he
